The earliest record I found of him was the 1870 census. He lived in San 
Rafael, Ca. and was a brick maker. I've searched the 5 names that are 
listed with him with no luck. I thought being so close to San Francisco I 
would find records there, but haven't yet. Whaling histories is a good 
idea. I'll start searching.
