Cheri, Thank you for reminding me of the "da Luz" translation. May I ask if you might help me confirm another suspicion on this subject, please?
Since my Maria da Luz's marriage record shows her parents as Manuel Cabral and Anna Alves, should I be looking for her under both those names as possibilities for her maiden name? I think I recall one of the lectures at our first Azorean Conference in SLC, that maiden names/children's surnames may not be of their father or mother, given the island practices of naming in the 1880s?
