Pat, I have a very limited speaking ability. Usually, I just went up to the taxi square (where they are all lined up) and you ask the first taxi driver if he speaks English. If he doesn't, he goes down the row, looking for one for you. But after a while, I got tired of that and would just say "Vamos a ___" and they could detect my accent and nod yes, and then I'd say "Compreneda-me?" and they'd nod yes and off we'd go.
