Yes that happens with names. During this time period it is common to see someone with two given names such as Francisco Jose son of Jose de Sousa. Most likely because there were other Francisco de Sousa's in the village they tagged on his father's first name to tell him from other Francisco de Sousa's. Later they went back to their normal family name, others adopted the second name so you see Portuguese surnames today such as Jose, Thomas, of Francisco.
