That makes sense to me. The meanings and nuances of the words are not clear to
me with my limited Portuguese language skills.
It might be interesting to see this couples marriage record to glean further
information. They're not related to me that I know of.....my Pereira's are from
Sao Jorge, however when I see a record that's different from the usual I'm
always intrigued since it's a bit of insight into the culture.
My fathers DNA is an "E" which is found in the Berber tribes.....maybe they
were considered moors in days of old....I haven't seen the term in my family
records but I have many, many more to search!

I think opportune
to remark that ‘moreno’
in portuguese has its etymological root in the word ‘Mouro’, ‘Moor’ in english.
So, I believe
that back in the past the word moreno
was specifically used for tanned skin people of mixed Berber and Arab descent.

Thank you for the information you've shared. I find this record interesting
because it's unusual. I found another record for this same couple....another
baptism, 1744-1763, page 0024, third record down on the left...Maria,...again,
right after the fathers name, Jose Pereira (I believe that's correct) it has
the word "moreno".....not capitalized as a name would be and just like the same
word on page 0014.....obviously the priest thought it should be noted that he
was "moreno". Maybe, Altino is right and the priest is saying the father is
black or dark.....any other possibilities, no capital, I doubt it's a name.
Enjoying the mysteries revealed through research!

I'm needle in a haystack searching Flamengos, Faial so reading each
record....could someone verify a word......baptisms 1744-1763......3rd down
right side of page 0014....Joam, filho do Jose Pereira? followed by what
appears to be the word morano/marono? Is that correct?
