Hi Dave L,

There is no index to the CCA. Just like there is no index to the volumes
of stuff at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) in
America.

What people are referring to here (for the most part) is the fact the
**some** of the books have an index. Imagine this: You are looking at a
book of baptisms for 1883-1885 and the priest took it upon himself to index
that book. He went to the back of the book where there were a few blank
pages and started writing down (by first name) all the baptisms. First,
all the Annas, all the Antonios, a couple of random Carlos', ten tons of
Manuels, 25 tons of Marias....you get the picture. This is the priest that
you want to be at your ancestor's freguesia! It's like getting lucky at
the casino! But that is all that it is really - just being lucky.

A few other finding aids may exist. Finding aids are my words. I research
on Sao Miguel, so I'm much better at rattling off things for that island.
We have the Rodrigo Rodigues books. We have the Carlos Machado genealogies
with an index in Gedcom format created by Fr. Joseph Viveiros from Swansea,
Massachusetts. Some of the Insulana books have indicies in them. There
were indices created by Ernesto Machado. Other islands have finding aids
too. Flores and Corvo have that marriage book (now downloadable) which is
a must have for those researching Flores and Corvo. It indexes ALL the
marriages on those 2 islands!! There's the Forjaz book. I can't remember
what he indexed. There's something for Terceira, but I can't recall the
name. Pico has the Maria Norberta Amorim book (3 freguesias only) which
became the basis for the old NEPS web site (today called the CITCEM-GHP).

Maybe I should start a separate thread called Finding Aids and we can post
what we know there. Then maybe Kathy Cardoza or I can compile it and post
it on the Azores GenWeb so everyone can consult it. Or any ideas on better
words than "Finding Aids?"
