I am curious what others think of this marriage that I came across in
Achada. The marriage took place in 1777. The couple is distantly related
to me.

What caught my eye was the years of baptismal. The groom was baptized in
"mille sette centos secenta e quarto annos" = 1764. The bride in "mille
sette centos secenta e seis" = 1766. Portuguese numbers kind of trip me up
so I checked my translations and confirmed them. This would mean the groom
was 13 and the bride 11? I have never seen such a young couple in the
Azores! Here is the marriage record for reference:
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1758-1787/SMG-ND-ACHADA-C-1758-1787_item1/P94.html

I began to think that maybe the Priest made a mistake. He was tired. He
really meant 1754 and 1756 (or something else), not 1764 and 1766. I
decided to find the baptismal records to see if they were in those years.
I found the groom, Joze, in 1764 (bottom of left hand page, son of Matheus
Correa):

And, I found the bride, Roza, in 1766 (left hand side bottom, dau of
Domingas Pimentel):

I have not translated out the marriage record in it's entirety yet as I
haven't had a chance to really work through it. I wonder what other
researchers think. Did these two really marry so young? Would they have
set up house at such a young age--would their have been a delay until they
were older? As I said, I have never come across a couple so young in my
research. It's sparked my curiosity.

And, if I'm reading these records incorrectly, please let me know! I'm
vital record and swear word fluent in Portuguese, so I could be missing
something or misinterpreting words.
