I agree with Cheri and also Margaret about not letting autofill do the work, it
doesn’t come out right. I use the fregusia, island (because as Cheri states,
there are more than one Santo Amaro’s etc.!) Azores, Portugal. But, do not
write St. George for Sao Jorge! When someone is searching we want them to be
able to find the Island of Sao Jorge! Joao is correct it writing Acores but I
started with Azores and I hate to change that. I also believe that all of us
are agreeing to write the Azorean names in the modern spelling i.e. Manuel not
Manoel, Isabel not Izabel. If you don’t standardize the names in your database
you will never be able to connect your names you will spend all of your time
trying to figure out if they are the same person. It is so confusing anyway
when you have 5 to 10,000 names in your database to try and find Manoel Souza
and Manuel Sousa and connect them because they are the same guy!

Donna O,

There is a group of us who are going to come up with some guidelines for data
entry input.

You are using Family Tree Maker or Ancestry.com? I spoke with one of their
representatives at Jamboree last month. He said that their places are very
American-centric. And they really don't know what they are doing in certain
places of the world. I think I called up Ribeirinha for the tech. The auto
fill said "Ribeirinha, Azores, Portugal." I told the Ancestry guy that there
at least 4 Ribeirinhas in the Azores, on 4 different islands. I told him that
"Ribeirinha, Azores, Portugal" was about as precise as "Plymouth, United
States" as there is a Plymouth in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New
Hampshire, California, etc, etc. I don't know if my suggestion will go very
far, but at least I made them aware of it.

For whatever it's worth, I type the fregusia, island, Azores, Portugal. I type
the church only if there is more than 1 in that freguesia. However, my program
is very precise about the places. I don't have just a place field. It is sub
divided into Detail, City, County, State, etc. I could modify them to say
Freguesia, Concelho, etc, but because I have my American lines currently merged
with my Portuguese lines, I leave it alone.
