Jeremy,
IF you have a wooden or rubber stopper under a door in your house that is a
wedge.  That same object in Portuguese is called a wedge.  There are other
examples but I am keeping it simple.
I have lots of relatives that were Cunhas in Santa Maria and when they came to
the US in the 1800s changed it to Wedge (the Portuguese equivalent).
I believe it's cuneus in Latin.
The Italian name Cuneo also translates to wedge in English.
Best,helen cunha kerner

There were/are many Cunhas in the Half Moon Bay area (the middle school bears
the name). I never heard of any using an Americanized version--even though
there could be problems pronouncing it. However, if it was chased to something
completely different it would be hard to know if you didn't know the family
beforehand. (Though its not my family name I've heard it all my life so it
doesn't look or sound strange to me.)

Does anyone have any ideas or knowledge as to how Cunha may have been changed
in the U.S.? (like Machado often became Martin....)
Thanks!
