Cher,I have done both 1 and 2 in case 1, but have also added in the notes the
information.  I myself would do the same for those who were immigrants and
non-immigrants.

When entering a name into your genealogy program, how do you deal with
multiple names?

Case 1 (immigrant)
Say your ancestor is Joao da Silva, but the vast majority of records in America
call him John and your family called him John. What do you enter into your
genealogy program?

1) Joao da Silva
2) Joao "John" da Silva
3) Joao da Silva and I also have my program make a 2nd name from him in the
Nickname, AKA, or Name Variation field (event, tag, etc).
4) Other

Case 2 (non-immigrant)
What do you do for non-immigrant names? Say the ancestor was John Dewey Smith
but he went by Dewey his whole life?
1) John Dewey Smith
2) John Dewey "Dewey" Smith
3) John Dewey Smith and I also have my program make a 2nd name from him in the
Nickname, AKA, or Name Variation field (event, tag, etc).
4) Other

Family Tree DNA is revising the trees according to Gedcom standard, but they
were curious as to what people do in practice.
Thanks, Cheri
