G'day all,

I'm still awaiting further information from the owner of the picture and
hopeful of being able to sight the original soon. The owner believes the
photo to be that of our great grandfather's sisters but I doubt the
suggestion given it is known that his sisters were born between 1820 and
1837. As I understand it, photography was still very much in its infancy in
the 1830s so the likelihood is that the girls in the photo are not who they
are thought to be.

I agree with both Linda and Rosemary that the photo is more likely taken
around 1870 to 1890.

My great grandfather Manoel deAzevedo de Sousa Amarante came from the town
of Manadas on the island of São Jorge and arrived in Australia in 1850. I
suspect the children are most likely either his nieces or grand nieces.
Certainly it is my understanding that the family were "well healed" and I
suspect the photo was taken on São Jorge.

If more information comes to hand, I'll update this post.

Thanks again. Tony
