Doreen, it’s true that some people do not document and that there are errors.
I found this to be true for both Ancestry and Family search. It’s frustrating
when you research and document and someone enters incorrect info in your line
even when the documentation is right there as a “Source”.

Yes if names are duplicates, you merge them after careful review. Names can
also be unnerved if you find it’s not the same person or family. At times I
call family search library and talk to missionaries who are there to help
answer questions when you are stuck with a situation like you mentioned.
Number is upper right area.

But Sometimes I have to remind myself that these names do not belong only to
me but that these people might have descendants scattered in parts of the world
beyond what I thought.

On Ancestry i had entered names and photos and some people picked up the “leaf
hints” and adopted the photos and ancestors. But they were incorrect. I
contacted the person and told them how their ancestor was a different person
from a different island, etc. to my disappointment, the corrections were not
made. From that time forth, I did not enter more info on ancestry. Actually,
now my tree in Ancestry is private.

I do, however, enter all my info on family search.

There was a person who inserted a child who was born before the parents in one
instance and I contacted them and together we tried to find his ancestor. It
took time and a call to Salt Lake but it was corrected. At least there’s some
place to get help.

I have also connected with distant cousins who entered other parts of the
family. Pretty cool!

I have found duplicates and merged them and therefore added to a family line.
I document every name that I enter with the link to the source. Yes, it is not
required, I just feel it is the right thing to do after doing all the research.

There is a section for disagreement or questioning towards the bottom of every
name.

Yes, I would contact the person who entered incorrect info and I would ask if
they can provide document action as well. Most people want to do it right but
there will be errors. Like someone said in another email earlier, verify
everything. If it’s wrong, write in the section why it’s wrong and provide
correct source.

I don’t know if this gives you another perspective.

Best wishes,

Maria Elena Lima
