Was it a requirement for all people departing the islands to "get a passport" 
as in be recorded even if it wasn't their first time leaving. I ask because I'm 
looking through the records and can't seem to find the corresponding records to 
the US immigration records. The immigration records for here in the US say 
Maria Julia Borges(maiden name Desouza or Souza, though not in the record) 
departed from São Miguel on June 18th 1905 with son Julio and arrived in New 
Bedford, Ma on July 1st 1905. But I can't seem to find her name in the Passport 
records on São Miguel for that time.
