Lillian, You really need to do a lot more searching in the USA records to find the original village. As Cheri has said before, there are 26 Concelhos on Sao Miguel to try looking! She will be looking for de Souza or in this country probably just Sousa with an 's' with no 'de'. Bettencourt is also de in the Islands or just plain Bettencourt.
