I've used it for over a year with backuppc with no problems on internal IDE drives. Mine is on a software RAID1 (md device) and I have had regular crashes when the mirror drive is on an external firewire device. I suspect your filesystem is corrupted from some of the crashes or from converting through incompatible versions.
