they are indeed slow; but on the other hand they produce comparatively
little heat, and are cheap.
there's also some instructions built into them for making encryption
processing much more efficient (DES at least, maybe others), and patching
your kernel to take advantage of that really does make a difference.

so like anything else, choose it when it's an appropriate tool for the job.
