I thought there was a note somewhere in the docs that says clients should have reverse DNS set up for them, though I can't find that mention at the moment. But if you're starting backups and they don't fail immediately, it's probably not the issue you're searching to solve. > > > > This is almost certainly a network error, unrelated to rsync or whatever > > application might be running. I agree with this statement. > My notebook can copy the data maybe 30% of the time. The slower > computers cannot. > Your exhaustive tests have shown that faster machines tend to do better. That points to a timing issue, where the error is likely to happen in X minutes, and if your machine is quick enough, sometimes it doesn't happen to you. That definitely points to something external to the backup server. Do you have anything going on in the network at a periodic interval, such as a reset of some switch?
The best suggestion so far is to take the network out of the equation and hook your laptop up to the switch closest to the server and see if it works two or three times in a row. If so, start moving further away topologically until it fails. I'm sure you'll find a pattern in there, somewhere. The spirits in the hardware will be appeased and you will get some sleep. :-) JH ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
