Why not use rsyncd?

There is a simple installer you can download from the backuppc site. the 
service.bat inside that installs it as a service, and optionally opens 
up the firewall to allow access to the rsyncd.

Rsyncd can be set to only accept connections from the backuppc server 
and you can use auth if necessary.

rsyncd runs on tcp port 873 and you can use it on the mac's too. No need 
for smb sharing.
