I think apt "said" this because backuppc was still running when you 
installed the new package?

Try: /etc/init.d/backuppc stop
Then start aptitude and *purge* your old backuppc-package (don't forget 
to make a backup of /etc/backuppc). Reinstall the new package with 
apt-get install (-f? debian might complain about broken dependencies) 
and you should be fine.
