Yes you will see a lot of disk activity - I'm seeing around 300 disk 
operations a second with 4 backups running on a raid10 setup under 
FreeBSD (hint use gstat to see disk activity).

Backups speed is very much a function of file size - one of my backup 
clients is all big files (media and hd images) - it backs up at close to 
10mb/sec (from a MacPro over gigabit) - the system drive on the same box 
backs up at around 2 MB/sec,

Which reminds me - I've had good results splitting large machines into 
multiple backup jobs each targeting a different drive on the client.   
Once the full backups get out of phase with each other it spreads the 
load out quite well.
