Sweet, I've got it I think. Under Gentoo, it is customary to use /etc/backuppc and not /etc/BackupPC, and I think that me changing the directory in that way was the problem. I'd still like the ability to move the configuration directory, but this will work just fine for now! This is good though because it didn't require me to patch any files...
