I've had about the same luck with my internal and external drives - not 
surprising since the drive component is the same.  If I only used 
external drives I'd want to swap frequently and have some extras in the 
rotation so it would probably take at least as many as I use with my 
mirrored internal set plus two externals that rotate offsite.
