A couple of weeks ago I had trouble
configuring BackupPC to include and exclude
client directories. With the help of readers
of this list, I learned that I didn't understand
the syntax and semantics of the $Conf{BackupFilesOnly}
variable.
One way that I could have avoided this misunderstanding
would have been to use a mechanism that's already
present in BackupPC, although it's used in a different
place and in a different way.
What I'm thinking is that wouldn't it be nice if
when a user is going to select what directories
to backup (or exclude), the backup manager is presented
with a directory tree displaying the directory
structure of the client to be backed up. This
would look very similar to the directory tree
that BackupPC displays when users browse existing
backups to select the files and directories to be
restored.
By selecting the desired locations in the directory
tree, the cgi Perl script could automatically fill
in $Conf{BackupFilesOnly} correctly. Plus, this method
would make it easier to backup a large number of directories
and files than entering everything by hand.
What do you think?
Cordially,
