Further information...I was able to do an incremental backup from 013008 to
present, however the failure is still occurring on full backups.

Subject: [BackupPC-users] Problem with backups
I am running backuppc 3.1.0 on Debian, and having problems with a Debian
client. I have been running this same configuration for over a year.
My backup machine (lexington) is running Debian/sid, as is the workstation in
question. Backups run fine on all machines except for the my workstation
(defiant), which has a large amount of data to back up, as it always has. I'm
using tar to perform the backups, and have my backuppc user on defiant is set
up to run tar via sudo. Here are some of my symptoms:
* Failed backu tarExtract: Unexpected end of tar archive (tot = 1048576, num =
818688, posn = )
tarExtract: Removing partial file
opt/ktdms/openoffice/program/libxo680li.so.1.1
tarExtract: BackupPC_tarExtact aborting (Unexpected end of tar archive)
tarExtract: Done: 1 errors, 20043 filesExist, 667045802 sizeExist, 254733071
sizeExistComp, 20053 filesTotal, 676147043 sizeTotal
Got fatal error during xfer (Unexpected end of tar archive)defiant.
Backup aborted (Unexpected end of tar archive)
ps. Logs on lexington show "Unexpected end of tar archive" and "Tar exited with
error 65280 () status" tarExtract: Unexpected end of tar archive (tot =
1048576, num = 818688, posn = )
tarExtract: Removing partial file
opt/ktdms/openoffice/program/libxo680li.so.1.1
tarExtract: BackupPC_tarExtact aborting (Unexpected end of tar archive)
tarExtract: Done: 1 errors, 20043 filesExist, 667045802 sizeExist, 254733071
sizeExistComp, 20053 filesTotal, 676147043 sizeTotal
Got fatal error during xfer (Unexpected end of tar archive)
Backup aborted (Unexpected end of tar archive)
* I'm gettiing various failures on defiant. Everything from killing the KDM
login to killing the machine:
2008-02-07 07:53:06 Got fatal error during xfer (Unexpected end of tar archive)
2008-02-07 07:53:14 Backup aborted (lost network connection during backup)
2008-02-07 08:00:10 no ping response
2008-02-07 09:00:16 no ping response
The machine dropping only seems to occur during backups. I tried running the
command from lexington's command line, and it worked for a fewe minutes,
then...

Assessment.doc
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
ssh works from lexington to defiant, as does tar.
Searching google, I saw a number of similar posts, but no solutions. I'm
wondering, would switching over to rsync be an option? What would be involved
in switching from tar to rsync?
Thanks all,
