for instance $200
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&kc=6W300&l=en&oc=bsdwd2a&s=bsd&dgc=BF&cid=7420&lid=197374

get 2 1TB drives for a RAID1 mirror $269.99 each / $539.98 for the pair.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148274

now you have $739.98 into the system.

setup the drives as a RAID1 with 3 members, then you can put an external 1TB
drive in
$231.95 for 1TB extern USB (you could get 3 of these an rob the drive of and
save some cash)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136186

now you are $971.93 into the system with a mirrored 1TB setup with an
external 1TB for off site backups.

make a shell script to add that mirror to your RAID1 and let it sync, then
fail the drive and unmount it and notify you via email or something. put
that script into the hotplug actions so that when the USB drive with the
externals ID is hotplugged, run the script. then you just plug the drive in
and let it run and wait for the email that says its done.

hope this helps you, good luck.
