Hallo Holger, Thanks for taking time to discuss such "stupid questions" ;-) with me...

You're saying the > client machine to be backed up is actually named "localhost" If you mean "client machine name" = "ClientNameAlias", then yes. > (which coincidentally maps to the BackupPC server's loopback > address), so that is what is pinged. If you said the host Well, actually the ping command pings $host, which I think is *not* $ClientNameAlias. If it's *indeed* the same thing, then I understand what is being pinged ;-) > name was actually "remotehost", wouldn't you expect that to be pinged? > > That said, it really depends on your PingCmd. If you set, for example, > > $Conf {PingCmd} = '/usr/bin/ssh -ql administrator > remotehost.com ping -c 1 10.0.0.254'; > > that may or may not work, because the user name > 'administrator' suggests you're talking to a Windoze machine. > But if you've got sshd, you might have ping, and it might > produce sane output and exit code ... I stress it again: I *didn't* change the default PingCmd, it still looks like "$pingPath -c 1 $host" and I get "Pings to remotehost1 have succeeded 12 consecutive times." and backups are working!
