I'm fairly sure that it will exit at startup if it can't make a link 
under the pc and cpool directories.  That's a common problem when people 
try to change the storage location, but it should also fail on missing 
media.   Also, it's easy to add other tests in the startup script.

One approach is to buy yourself a spiffy new computer to work on and 
relegate the old box to backup and other network services.
