I use rsync 3.0.6 on my macs and it work perfectly and very stable and
reliable.
I recommend using 3.0.6 because of stability. 2.9.6 had a problem on
filesystems with too many hard links on it (memory allocation problem)
Check this out:
installing rsync 3.0.6 on a Mac Leopard (requires compilation with
Xcode)

I have been using backuppc to backup win-boxes onto a Linux server
using cygwin rsync running on the win-boxes. Now I am trying to use
backuppc on some Macs (OS X), but I am having difficulty get it to
work. There have been some comments that rsync is not a good option
for the Mac due to its file system. Is this still valid? Is anyone
able to point me to a good source of information about using
backuppc with the Mac?
On a second point, do the machine based config files in the pc
directory over-rule the config.pl file? For example can I use rsync
on the win-boxes and tar for the Macs by specifying this in the
machine configuration files?
