Hello,

I have a virtual private server hosted at my internet provider. System
is CentOS 6.5 with BackupPC 3.3.0.

I use it as offsite backup facility for the most important data on my
local NAS. I partioned the data such that each "host" corresponds to one
logical data set, like code repository, document storage, etc. of - as I
thought - not too big size.

The uplink is a slow DSL line with a maximum of 640 kBit/s towards the
BackupPC server. BackupPC server is connected to NAS via openVPN.
Transfer method is rsyncd.

Largest data set ("host") so far was about 1 GB. It took a few days to
complete the first full backup. Since then daily incrementals and weekly
fulls run smoothly.

Next data set added was my home directory with 15 GB. Attempts to
complete the first full backup have been lasting 8 days for now. Log says:

2014-09-21 13:04:52 full backup started for directory users-neubert
2014-09-22 22:21:47 Aborting backup up after signal ALRM

2014-09-29 06:40:06 Got fatal error during xfer (aborted by signal=ALRM)
2014-09-29 06:40:06 full backup started for directory users-neubert

What bothers me are the fatal errors (signal= ALRM) in combination with
the last lines of the "Last bad XferLOG" (right after the list of
transferred files):

Child is aborting
Done: 27503 files, 16082763640 bytes
Got fatal error during xfer (aborted by signal=ALRM)
Backup aborted by user signal
Not saving this as a partial backup since it has fewer files than the prior one
(got 27503 and 27503 files versus 27628)

Does this mean that I am actually stuck in an endless loop because there
is a certain point in time or amount of data beyond which the backup
does not go?

What are the reasons for the aborts or where do I need to look? They are
not related to regular or irregular disconnects and IP reassignments.
That I know from the DSL connection logs.

Kind regards
Boris
