There is plenty of space that is not the issue.

Are you sure that the partition is not running out of space during the
restore?   If there are existing files, rsync will make a hidden new
copy to merge in the changes needing more space than you would expect.
  Also if there are sparse files in the backup they may take more space - and 
more time - to restore.
