You could try an strace on the process ids at each end. If they both
are waiting on network input, perhaps you have some kind of
nat/firewall session timeout. Not sure why this would happen if it
doesn't during backups, though. If you need a brute-force
workaround, try using BackupPC_tarCreate to create a tar image (or
download through a web browser) and feed it to tar to do the restore.
