I have come across a problem with shares on windows servers and pc's. My backup server runs CentOS 7 with BackupPC version 3.3.1. I have a few remote Linux and Windows servers that are backed up for over a year now. The windows machines all use smb for backup. Linux all rsync over ssh.

In the last two weeks, all the backups of Windows shares fail with errors like:

2015-12-24 03:52:05 full backup started for share D$
2015-12-24 14:43:57 Got fatal error during xfer (No files dumped for share D$)
2015-12-24 14:44:02 Backup aborted (No files dumped for share D$)
and in the bad Xfers log:

[ skipped 32700 lines ]
tar:800 Total bytes received: 738810378621
[ skipped 29 lines ]
tarExtract: Done: 1 errors, 1195441 filesExist, 738385778494 sizeExist, 670132487909 sizeExistComp, 1210757 filesTotal, 738940686109 sizeTotal
Got fatal error during xfer (No files dumped for share D$)
Backup aborted (No files dumped for share D$)
Not saving this as a partial backup since it has fewer files than the prior one (got 1210757 and 0 files versus 1215576)

The linux servers, working over rsync finish successfully.

If I follow the backup of a Windows server, in the $BackupPC_Dir/pc/<server>/new directory the set of directories and files all appear as the backup progresses. But then when it completes, for some reason BackupPC "thinks" that nothing got backed up, and then deletes the "new" directory and exits with failure.

I think this began after an update to the backup server. It is now running samba 4.2.3. Previously was 4.1.
Any ideas what could be wrong and how to overcome it?

Thanks,
Micha
