Thanks for the pointers.  I'll hold on to this in case I have time to dig

I did get the email notification after about a week... I don't remember the
precise timing now, but if that turned up on a weekend I'd likely not have
noticed it for a few days either.  After that I spent a few days watching
it to try to figure out why it wasn't getting backed up, and then started
scheduling backups by hand.

Changing the notification threshold is probably a good choice, but what I'm
more interested in doing is setting up something to interpret
BackupPC_serverMesg output so that I can get backup status into my actual
monitoring system.
