This is all kinda off-topic. I don't really want to get into it all yet again, and I think in future I'll probably just point to one or two of my previous posts. For now I'll give you the Nutshell version since over the past year my working methods for BackupPC have settled down quite a bit. My main problem is with Github's UI - having to use a browser. My browser of choice doesn't work at all so I have to fire up a second browser just to talk to Github. Then, when I try to do something like merge a PR I'm lucky if it doesn't give me a 404 - so much of the time I'm not confident that it's done what I expected it to do. When Craig and I worked on passing the reins from him to me, he'd say things like "The green button does that", and my response would be e.g. "What .... green button?". I found I was spending about 10% of my time doing the work, and 90% of my time trying to get Github to behave. When I asked on the Github help pages, all the replies were from people saying they had the same problems - but no solutions. At that point I gave up on it. The way I work at present is to use the git command line interface to do everything that involves Github, basically using it as nothing but a remote repository. When I want to look at change history and similar I use a tool called 'gitk' locally. I find it invaluable, vastly more usable than the Github approaches to the same kinds of thing. The main irritation is that local git tags don't appear to be transferred to the remote. I can live with that; I think I read it's a feature of Git itself, not one of Github's making. Github seems capable of handling chatty interactions in the 'issues'. That's about the only other thing I find it useful for but even so I'd much prefer that kind of stuff to be on the mailing list. A lot of 'issues' are just people asking questions, and wading through them all looking for real issues causes a lot of extra work. In my view there should be one place only where issues are discussed - that is here on this mailing list, and I can use 'grepmail' if I need to.

Am I supposed to connect using a browser? When I tried it said, "Access denied" Same thing I tried using an anonymizing proxy. Just another hurdle, wasting time. I have no confidence that any of this stuff will stand the test of time so I don't feel that I want to spend my own limited time on it when it could otherwise be spent on BackupPC itself.
