I guess it is somehow related to the sleep mode my mac goes into during
the night.
Instead of directly calling rsync on my mac I am calling now caffeine
-im whicht then calls rsync. I will monitor if this helps but I am
pretty sure.

As you're sure it's not a memory issue then my first guess is that an
rsync process is 'defunct'. I see this a lot when I'm developing
rsync-bpc. Does you have the 'top' utility and do you ever see it
flagging a process as defunct? If I'm right then I think it's likely
that you're triggering an error which is not being handled properly by
rsync-bpc, or possibly by BackupPC-XS. In the past week or two I've
pushed fixes for a couple of issues which can cause this sort of
thing. Can you let me know the exact versions of everything you're
using (BackupPC, BackupPC-XS, and rsync-bpc)?
