And if you look at the history of early Christianity, there were many different groups with radically different beliefs and understandings of who Jesus was. Mainstream Christianity comes out of one branch, but even in the Bible itself you can read about how Paul was the leader of one faction, but there were others who disagreed with him. What I would suggest is that one of the non-Pauline branches is a more accurate reflection of what Jesus actually taught.
