About two years ago, Helis Oil attempted to drill at least two
wells to produce simultaneously from the Bakken and Three
Forks formations, The Levang (22-150-95) was completed in the
TFS and then a second horizontal leg was drilled in the Middle
Bakken. The well file indicates they had very high pressures
and drilled only a short hole in the Bakken due to
"concerns for the crew and rig". I believe this well
continues to produce from both the Bakken and TFS.

The same type of completion was attemped at the Helis
Linseth well (8-149-95). Again, it appears they had
a series problems with this type of dual completion.
I think most of the other Helis wells in this area are
now being completed in the Three Forks with the
Bakken awaiting another round of developement. There
are numberous Bakken wells in all directions of from
this field (as well as recent Three Forks discoveries).

There is very little doubt that the Three Forks/Sanish
produce Bakken oil. The main question is if the lower
Bakken Shale acts as barrier between the reservoir rock
of the Middle Bakken and the Three Forks/Sanish. If
this lower shale is a strong barrier it would seem
likely you could produce the Three Forks to the extent
of its producive life, then plug it off and drill the
Bakken leg (or vise-versa) and get full Middle Bakken
potential. Wells testing this theory are being planned/
drilled and the results should be known in the not to
distant future. It is very likely the results will
vary by area within the basin.
