Meulaboh Local Government `s Beginning to Operate

Since two days ago, the local government of Meulaboh, the capital of 
West Aceh, has begun to operate. The activity is indicated by inter-
government bureau coordination in listing and taking inventory of 
the damage caused by the outbreak.

Meulaboh, Acehkita. Since two days ago, the local government of 
Meulaboh, the capital of West Aceh, has begun to operate. The 
activity is indicated by inter-government bureau coordination in 
listing and taking inventory of the damage caused by the outbreak.

West Aceh Regent, Syahbudin BP, on Monday (3/1) states that he has 
instructed district government officials and bureaus in Meulaboh to 
join forces in rebuilding the city.

Syahbudin also says that the shipment of foodstuff supply through 
sea route is getting smoother. And his personnel have supervised the 
logistics in 11 districts. In the meantime, it is estimated that 
power network and communication channel which are still inoperative 
will function again within a week.

Meanwhile, according to Acehkita observation, the residents of 
Meulaboh which pre-disaster were totaled 60 thousand people at 
present are cleaning the rubble of what used to be their houses. 
This activity is visible along the road from Cut Nyak Dien Airport 
to Meulaboh, especially in the city center-along the streets of 
Teuku Umar and Nasional.

People driving two-wheel and four-wheel-vehicles (L 300 or Star 
Wagon) can be seen along the road from the district of Meureubo to 
Meulaboh.

"Last night I summoned the district government authorities and the 
health and education officials to a attend a coordination meeting. I 
asked them to list the survivors and casualties, either dead or 
missing, and to take inventory of the government buildings which are 
destroyed due to the disasters," says Syahbuddin who is a survivor 
of the earthquake and tsunami disasters.

According to him, among the 11 districts in Meulaboh, the worst 
impact is suffered by the districts of Johan Pahlawan, Samatiga, 
Maureubo and Arongan Lombalek. "Every day our evacuation teams find 
at least 200 bodies under the ruins," says Syahbuddin.

The Minister of Social Affairs Bachtiar Chamsyah states that it is 
expected, within two or three days, Meulaboh economy will start 
rolling. "Since I came to Meulaboh four days ago, there has been a 
lot of progress in Meulaboh. I hope within two or three days 
Meulaboh economy will start rolling. We have also prepared 100 
gensets, 20 of which are already in Meulaboh. It will accelerate the 
recovery of Meulaboh local government and economy," explains 
Bachtiar Chamsyah.

According to the Regent, the number of missing casualties in 
Meulaboh is approximately 10.000-1,470 of which have been buried in 
two mass burial grounds in Beureugang and Ujung Karang areas. (dzie)
