My feeling is that if you want to launch a viral campaign at BarCamp then you have to do it on the same basis that everybody else is there and participates under -- you can't bring a load of people unless they're registered, you can't get a slot unless it's voted on by the others who are there. I do a agree with JFX that we have to look after the sponsors too (disclosure: I also speak for a sponsor). The big sponsors who make this possible would have every right to be angry that they don't get permission to do this and have not been invited to do this sort of thing (I don't speak for a big sponsor BTW). BarCamp isn't just about open source, but it is about community. It's anarchic and there aren't many rules -- participation is the only rule and that means participating in the discussions and the community not just giving away freebies or bringing pretty girls to hype your product. If you want to hype your product then go find the audience yourself -- BarCamp is most certainly not about delivering an audience to hear whatever advertisements a company wants to push. So where is the boundary? Whoever is registered is free to turn up and to talk to whoever they like about whatever they like. They can propose a topic and have it voted on like everybody else. As for handing out stuff, I think business cards are OK. I really don't want to swap the talks where we can all learn something useful for talks where we get told what to buy and think -- that isn't BarCamp.
