The idea around 3.5 was that because our large sponsors will not be coming because of the corporate travel bans on Thailand we would change it to a single day event with no free shirt to cut costs. Barcamp 3.5 would be dubbed the "No Shirt Barcamp". A little pun on the current political atmosphere. This would allow for a better funded Barcamp 4 in the future. To be honest the name does not matter. Perhaps leaving it as Barcamp 4, but promoting it as the "no shirt barcamp" would suffice. Since no shirts would be provided, it was thought that attendees would bring their nerdiest shirt/outfit and there would be a contest dubbed "Nerd Fashion show", to which I assume the winner would receive prizes or bragging rights.
Since our major international sponsors are out aside from perhaps Yahoo!, and a couple of the larger local ones, we will be needing additional local sponsors to cover the costs of printing banners, food and other miscellaneous expenses. Since the costs are down though, we figure we could find enough local sponsors soon to cover the shortfalls. This is going to require some kind of sponsorship drive. It was said that in Thailand, it's easy to move money between bank accounts with an ATM machine, but since I am not familiar with banking in Thailand, perhaps someone else can elaborate on how we could arrange something like this so that companies and individual can easily send Barcamp money, so we can initiate a budget for this event. John was talking about perhaps having Yahoo! sponsor an after party, rather than using them for BarCamp sponsorship. Since we can only hit up sponsors so many times in a year for money, perhaps saving them for a larger Barcamp 4 was also put on the table. It seemed we would be moving towards having them sponsor an after party if possible. If they are not interested in sponsoring an after party, we would still have one, but it wouldn't be paid for. Since Barcamp 3.5 would not have shirts, and since we know sponsors like to have their logos printed on something related to the events, we thought something like a coffee mug, water bottle or notepad would be a good idea. We all liked the idea of having a "no shirt barcamp", but we feel we need some souvenir and something for the logos. We need someone to figure out costs of custom printing on to these mediums. If anyone could gather information on printing costs on an 500 item run, and a 800 item run, that would be great. This information needs to get finalized and put on the website as soon as possible. We should also create an awareness drive to make sure people know this will be a one day event and that we need additional sponsors. I just found out my trip to Burma will be happening in June and not May, so I will be available to assist after the 11th of May.
