We normally do it in steps
1. format patch
$ git format-patch -s -n (n is the number of patch you plan to send, from top to bottom.)
2. check the patch
   $ ./scripts/checkpatch.pl <your patches>
3. send the patch
   $ git send-email --to=.. --cc=.. <patch files>
