You can use "setdebug" to achieve this. A debug level of 50 should be enough.

I did this yesterday (via bconsole, for dir and sd), but up to now there are now *trace files in /var/lib/bareos. Is it necessary to reload/restart the daemons? What did I wrong?

You could let sd and dir write a trace file and check what it exactly does.

any other ideas where to look at?
At the moment I frequently delete expired volumes manually so that I get free space back. But for
christmas I like to go on holidays for two weeks... ;-)

Many greets

Please check the log, it should write some info what happened when
trying to use the next volume.
