Just to double check the basics... :-)

Did you try running bcharge as root?

Does the power setting change to 500mA if you check before/after running
bcharge?

What happens if you run bcharge, then breset?

Could you send the full output of lsusb -v for the Blackberry?  Are there
any new USB configurations listed for the 8830?  Any new endpoints?

Do you have the capability of running Windows in a VMWare window?
