It is not normal to my knowledge, but when I had an 8830, I don't recall
testing the password.

The way the password handling works is that the password is sent in a hash
to the device, via USB, and it either accepts it or not.  In some devices,
if you enter the wrong password too many times, the device bricks itself.
I think newer devices aren't quite so strict, but I'm not sure.  In any
case, Barry only tries for about half of the available tries, and then
won't let you try anymore, assuming that something is wrong, and you
should use the Windows software instead.

If the Windows software behaves the same way, that would seem to indicate
that Barry is operating correctly, and it is the device that is confused.

On the 7700 series I have here, it doesn't prompt me at all, even if I
enter the wrong password over USB.  Using the right password just lets me in.

If you're getting a new device, presumably you've called support... I'd
recommend calling them again, and asking for ideas on how to get around this.
