I know I'm late responding, but I wanted to point out that Ubuntu/Kubuntu works fine with later models of BB.
I'm using a Blackberry Curve 8310 with Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) just fine. I installed an x64 build of Barry that I downloaded from SVN just before the release of 0.14. Maybe the problem is specific to the 7730 model, or maybe it affects earlier releases of the BB OS (I'm using 4.2.2.170). Not all Ubuntu users will be affected.
