Yea, that's what I thought too, that maybe I had missed that step, but this is what I get when trying to remove it:

root@relay-1:~# rabbitmqctl delete_user guest
Deleting user "guest" ...
Error: {no_such_user,<<"guest">>}

Here are the commands I used to set rabbitmq up:

rabbitmqctl add_user baruwa baruwa
rabbitmqctl add_vhost baruwa
rabbitmqctl set_permissions -p baruwa baruwa ".*" ".*" ".*"
rabbitmqctl delete_user guest
/etc/init.d/rabbitmq-server restart

This is what I have in settings.py: (tried localhost, host name, and 127.0.0.1)

#celery
CELERY_CONCURRENCY = 20
CELERY_DISABLE_RATE_LIMITS = True
BROKER_HOST = "127.0.0.1"
BROKER_PORT = 5672
BROKER_USER = "baruwa"
BROKER_PASSWORD = "baruwa"
BROKER_VHOST = "baruwa"
CELERY_QUEUES = {
    socket.gethostname(): {
        "exchange_type": "direct",
        "binding_key": socket.gethostname(),
    },
    "default": {
        "exchange": "default",
        "binding_key": "default"
    },
}
CELERY_DEFAULT_QUEUE = "default"
CELERY_DEFAULT_EXCHANGE = "default"
CELERY_DEFAULT_EXCHANGE_TYPE = "direct"
CELERY_DEFAULT_ROUTING_KEY = "default"

Yes, rabbitmq starts at boot and the settings and vhost info match the celery info in settings.py

I think I found the issue. When I launch celeryd manually, I get the following in the [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>:

{channel0_error,starting,
               {amqp_error,access_refused,
"AMQPLAIN login refused: user 'guest' - invalid credentials",
                           'connection.start_ok'}}

I think your rabbitmq authentication settings are incorrect.

Turns out a reboot somehow changes things. Where are the settings kept for rabbitmq? I am not finding them under /etc/rabbitmq
