The examples assumes that there is some data in your BASE installation and
just use whatever it happens to find. If there is no data in your BASE 
installation
not much will happen.I don't know how useful the examples are in a real
scenario. They are more targeted at developers so that they have some code
to look at. The examples are in Java, so I don't know how useful they will be
if you are going to use Perl. In any case, the web services on the server
side only supports reading data. If you want to upload and store data, you'll
need to develop additional web services on the server side as well.

Those scripts were developed against an early prototype of the web services
functionality. They no longer work and the developer who made them has not
updated them for the new web services functionality. Nothing on that page
is true anymore considering that the statement that we are working on a update
was written 18 months ago, I think we should really remove that page.
