ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Craig announced that he finds the way BayCon & WesterCon both handled
notifications about Covid were drastically different, BayCon less well than
WesterCon, but they still handled matters well

Yochanan announced that James Caan died & various people made comments &
then later Robin announced that Larry Storch also died last week

REVIEWS:

Rick reviewed 'For All Mankind' on Apple TV Plus as he has continued
viewing season 2 & thinks it's being done well.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_All_Mankind_(TV_series)

Valerie reviewed 'Fly by Night' by Frances Hardinge as a charming whimsical
kids' book in which the main character loves words and goes off spying
beside her killer goose;
     & Valerie reviewed 'The Angel of the Crows' by Katherine Addison was a
fun Sherlock Holmes as an angel novel;
     & Valerie reviewed BayCon as it was small, sales were slow, there were
parking issues, that there were limited food options, but she had fun
there, even though she did get lost in the Escher Marriott floor plan

Howeird reviewed 'The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch' History Channel program
as a bit weird & its dubious science is entertaining. He thinks the series
needs a meteorologist, not an astrophysicist & that the 'mysterious signal'
they keep picking up comes from their Windows computer program
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10589968/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0
     & Howeird reviewed the CNN coverage of the James Webb telescope being
unveiled today as having been a bit overblown
https://www.cnn.com/2022/07/11/world/james-webb-space-telescope-first-image-scn/index.html

Yochanan reviewed 'Shada', a Dr Who dvd written by Douglas Adams, as he was
pleasantly surprised by it & thought it was well done & Fred & Robin
followed-on about it, saying that some scenes from it were used in the '5
Doctors';
https://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Ep-109-Tom-Baker/dp/B076W4DBYP
     & Yochanan reviewed 'The Rise of Gru' movie as a lot of silliness & a
kid movie that did what it was supposed to do. He liked it as mindless,
enjoyable fun;
     & Yochanan reviewed continuing to watch 'ST = Strange New Worlds' as
he loves all Star Trek & this one is capturing the spirit of the original
series. He loves it & Valerie really likes it too. John O says there will
be a season 2 & it looks like there will be a 'Ready Room' for it, as well,
& he also enjoyed it, then Duncan said he also enjoys it & there was some
general discussion

Fred reviewed the fireworks at the Tonopha Westercon as excellent & one of
the best he has seen in years & that it was nice to watch with friends

Gayle reviewed the car they rented through 'Turo' as pretty good & they
take her vehicle insurance. They rented a 2022 Subaru Outback that worked
very well for them & their experience was good. Gerry commented that the
Subaru had a lot of interior space, good head room & cleaned easily. It
seemed really well-designed. Then Duncan said he was grateful that they
hauled the 13 inch telescope out to Tonapah to be used at-con;
     & Gayle reviewed the star-gazing party at the Tonopah Westercon, even
though the moon was very bright & many attendees did not wait long enough
to see the Andromeda galaxy rise late at night;
     Gayle also reviewed Westercon in general, saying the science panels at
Westercon were fantastic. Duncan also had a wonderful time there & thinks
the panels at Westercon were so much better than those at a MENSA
conference he also attended. Howeird had an attending membership which
gave him access to a lot of live feeds with excellent video streaming
quality, but the audio lacked microphones for panelists, so audio was very
bad overall. Rick commented that Tall Kevin & Lisa Hayes' choice of
Tonopah was absolutely vindicated - & Gerry agreed with this. Robin liked
that there wasn't a lot of walking involved in the small town & that there
was great accessibility, but there was a problem with smoke in one function
room. There should be recordings of some panels at Westercon posted online
in the near future. Rick reports that he's looked on YouTube for the
Westercon 74 channel, but is pretty sure it doesn't exist yet & says Kevin
Standlee has several presentations related to the con under his account,
https://www.youtube.com/user/kastandlee

Tammy reviewed a website called 'Artfight', an art channel that does
original character art drawn by different artists - as well as the original
artist. She says it gives many new insights on those characters and the
way character art can be handled

Craig mentioned that Lisa Harrigan had bypass surgery, that it went well &
she is on the mend. Then he reviewed BayCon as struggling, but he was glad
to have gotten a chance to attend & really enjoyed himself, even with the
Covid outbreak at-con. There was some discussion about the Covid alert
system, testing & way the con handled matters

we adjourned at 9:18 pm

and the rumor of the week was = 'Marriott will dump BayCon resulting in
BayCon being at Tonopah next year!'
