I am also a scientist and read a study a couple years ago that linked
ibuprofen with the opening of gap junctions that lead to a higher
influx of free radicals produced during strenuous exercise directly
into the muscles.  So although the general feelings of pain were
dulled during exercise, the recovery phase was hindered by the
presence of more free radicals in the recovering muscles.
