If you're running GNU Emacs, then it's not hung, it's just
fontifying. (to be said in storekeeper owner from Dead Parrot
sketch...). XEmacs seems to be much, much faster at doing the
fontification. Leave it running, go have a coffee, and see if it's
done when you come back.
